Ultra-lightweight concrete in the new construction of the youth center in Landsberg.
A special building material is being used for the new construction of the youth center in Landsberg am Lech. The executing construction company, Xaver Riebel from Mindelheim, is relying on ultra-lightweight concrete. The concrete is supplied by TBR Lechbeton from the Kaufering plant.
The unique thing about this building material is that it not only has a load-bearing function, but also simultaneously provides the insulation for the exterior wall. With a dry density of 620 kg/m³, which is about ¼ of the density of normal concrete, the concrete is even lighter than oak wood and floats in water. In the youth center, the ultra-lightweight concrete is used for the exterior walls without any additional insulation. Only a hydrophobization to protect against driving rain needs to be applied to the wall surface. The walls have a thickness of approximately 50 cm and can be 100% recycled at the end of their service life.
The installation of the plastic concrete is very simple via a hopper. However, it must be noted that the formwork is very tight, otherwise the cement mortar will run through the joints and bleeding will occur. Galvanized reinforcement is used for corrosion protection, as the concrete is completely carbonated due to its open-pored structure.
Since ultra-lightweight concrete is not yet standardized, an individual approval (ZiE – Zustimmung im Einzelfall) has been requested from the Upper Bavarian Building Authority.
