First CO₂ captured: CapsolGo® pilot plant launched in Brocēni
SCHWENK is consistently driving forward the decarbonization of cement production: On May 27, CO₂ was captured for the first time at the Brocēni site in Latvia using the mobile CapsolGo® pilot plant. The plant was installed in collaboration with the Norwegian company Capsol Technologies and is part of SCHWENK’s strategic commitment to forward-looking, climate-friendly technologies.
A key component of the ongoing test phase in Brocēni is the newly developed hot-gas cleaning system. It specifically treats the flue gas by removing dust particles prior to CO₂ capture—with the goal of reducing sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the future as well.
The test phase will run until the end of the year. During this period, comprehensive operational data will be collected—including water consumption, CO₂ concentrations, temperature trends, and the efficiency of exhaust gas purification. These findings will serve as an important foundation for the further development of our decarbonization strategy.
Last year, CapsolGo® technology was successfully tested as part of an initial demonstration campaign at the Akmenė site in Lithuania. The experience gained there is now being directly incorporated into the current test phase in Brocēni and underscores our commitment to further developing innovative solutions across all our sites.
With CapsolGo®, we are testing a so-called tail-end technology that can be flexibly integrated into existing facilities—another step on our path toward sustainable building materials, fully in line with our guiding principle: SUSTAINABILITY THAT WORKS.
