SCHWENK and Iberdrola: Green electricity for a medium-sized building materials manufacturer

19. December 2024

Press Release dated December 17, 2024

• SCHWENK will source 1,500 GWh from the Windanker offshore wind farm in the future
• Starting in 2027, Iberdrola’s Windanker offshore wind farm will supply green electricity from the German Baltic Sea

Ulm, December 17, 2024 – SCHWENK Zement GmbH & Co. KG and Iberdrola Deutschland are collaborating on green electricity supply and have agreed to a long-term supply contract. In the future, 1,500 GWh will be supplied to SCHWENK from the Windanker offshore wind farm currently under construction in the Baltic Sea. By sourcing electricity from the Windanker offshore wind farm, SCHWENK will be able to cover approximately 20% of its electricity consumption from certified alternative sources based on current demand, which represents a significant proportion. The companies have agreed on a fixed price, thereby providing each other with long-term planning security.

Thomas Spannagl, CEO of the SCHWENK Building Materials Group, commented: “Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our ongoing efforts to reduce specific electricity consumption, improve thermal energy efficiency, and cut CO2 emissions. Another key component is the gradual increase in SCHWENK’s share of green electricity through our own photovoltaic projects. The partnership with Iberdrola is therefore a clear step toward sustainability, and we are pleased to be making a significant contribution to increasing our share of green electricity.”

“Supplying German industry with green electricity is a key element of our strategy for Germany,” emphasized Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Germany. “We are very pleased about this long-term partnership on equal terms that we are now entering into with SCHWENK,” Montero continued. “In doing so, we are not only collaborating with a major building materials manufacturer, but also with a family-owned company with a long tradition and an eye toward the future. In the future, we also want to support other industrial companies in achieving their climate goals.”

Further information about the wind farm
The Windanker offshore wind farm, currently in the planning stage, is designed to include 21 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW. The wind farm will be located approximately 38 km northeast of the German island of Rügen and will cover an area of approximately 17.9 km².
